Security lights are the bane of many people’s lives. They tend to use large halogen bulbs to flood an area with light, including the neighbours windows. They waste energy, and cause light pollution. Think carefully before you fit one. If you do need one, go for a CFL type, fit a hood, fit a passive infra-red sensor (with sensitivity adjustment) and angle it downwards to reduce light pollution.

The Campaign for Rural England are running a campaign to reduce light pollution.
